Conference: Politics of Creative Industries: Critical Reflections 24-25 March 2013 |
The creative industries in East Asia have been growing rapidly and played an increasingly important role in the national politics of countries such as China, South Korea and Japan since the mid-1990s. Cultural policy emphasizing the value of creativity and culture has been prioritized in these countries. The development of the creative industries cannot be decoupled from politics. It is important to study the political dimension of the economic activities of the creative industries and the contents of the creative and cultural products as they reflect broader socio-political issues such as nation-building, ethnicity and gender. This conference provides a platform for scholars from various disciplines such as business, media studies, cultural studies, history and anthropology to study key issues related to the politics of the creative industries through an interdisciplinary perspective. The aims of the conference are to examine and clarify the politics of the creative industries, reflect and refine the meaning of ‘popular culture’ in society and examine and evaluate different cultural policies. All are welcome, no registration is required. The conference is generously funded by the School of Modern Languages and Cultures. Venue: Centennial Campus, The University of Hong Kong Contact: Dr. Dixon Wong (hwwongc@hku.hk) or Ms. Karin Chau (karinclf@hku.hk) |
